The Nutrition Consultancy (TNC) offers nutritional therapy for health and healing
from Christopher Scarfe Dip ION, MBANT
"There's no substitute for good health"
But how do you achieve it in the modern world?
Does an apple a day keep the doctor away?
Can one person's meat be poison to another?
What is organic food: isn't all life organic?
Is 'natural' necessarily safe?
Will you get all the nourishment you need from a 'well balanced diet'?
To jog or not to jog?
Can dieting make you fat?
Just as there's no substitute for good health, there's no substitute for good nourishment in providing the foundation for it. And once you provide that foundation you can enhance the performance of your physiology to improve:
Digestion and absorption
blood-sugar control - immunity
hormonal balance - energy
nervous-system balance
disease resistance - mood
stamina - skin condition - memory
and more...
Background
During the 1960's scientists and medical researchers coined the term 'orthomolecular medicine' to describe their work using vitamins, minerals and amino acids in the treatment of diagnosable disorders. It means medicine using 'the correct molecule' for the job. It relies on the principle that naturally-occurring molecules, needed by the body for good health and vitality can become disturbed or depleted, leading to disturbed biochemistry and symptoms. By replenishing these naturally-occurring molecules order can be restored.
In 1986 Christopher Scarfe graduated from The Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION) when he established The Nutrition Consultancy, applying the principles of orthomolecular medicine through the practice and teaching of nutritional therapy. He then became a partner and co-owner of ION between 1987 and 1990.
On leaving ION he continued his work with The Nutrition Consultancy, which has included researching, writing and publishing about the biochemistry and physiology of nutrients, especially minerals; designing and developing nutrient supplements; specialising in the nutritional treatment of arthritic, digestive and mood disorders and teaching sound nutritional practice to students and the public through lectures and seminars.
In 1989 he published How to Improve your Digestion and Absorption (ION Press) and has another manuscript ready for publication.
Principles of Practice
The purpose of The Nutrition Consultancy is to contribute to the improvement of human health through education in the area of nutritional biochemistry, diet and nutrient supplementation.
At TNC we practice nutritional therapy in the spirit of holism, treating clients as individuals whose needs are unique.
We follow no particular dietary philosophy, wishing only to assist individuals in achieving their health goals by using the principles upon which Nature has founded human biochemistry and physiology.
It is our understanding that minerals form the foundation for organic life and that loss of balanced physiological function can quite often be traced to mineral deficiency.
While minerals may be fundamental, all other nutritional and lifestyle factors are included in the clinical assessment and subsequent advice given.
We have experience and understanding of conventional and other non-conventional therapies and their effects, as well as their interactions with nutritional interventions. These are taken into account in the assessment and recommendations given to clients.
Procedure and Fees
To book a consultation please contact us for a questionnaire, either by telephone or email to the office, details below.
Once we have received your completed questionnaire and part-payment we will contact you to make arrange an appointment. Your consultant will then have time to make an initial assessment of your questionnaire. This will be used as a foundation for the consultation, which provides additional information for a more thorough and full assessment of your nutritional needs.
Your consultant will write to you after your appointment to confirm and expand on what was discussed during the consultation, highlighting prominent aspects of your health and any specific nutritional strategies that may be helpful.
This service costs £75 and includes:
Initial questionnaire assessment
90 minute personal consultation either in person or over the telephone
a detailed personal post-consultation report with diet and supplement recommendations.
Additional follow-up consultations can be booked after six months if you would like a review and these are charged at £40 per hour in clinic or by telephone.
We ask for £25 part-payment in advance, to be sent with your completed questionnaire and will present an invoice for the remaining £50. This to be paid at the consultation. For distant consultations, clients will be posted an invoice immediately after the telephone consultation for the balance due, to be received before their personal report is dispatched.
If you are advised to take nutrient supplements, we will recommend products from supplement manufacturers with whom we have long-standing relations and whose products have proven themselves with clients over the years. The cost of supplements is not included in the clinic fees.
Appointments for The Nutrition Consultancy clinic are held in Helston Cornwall, and for those unable to attend the clinic, consultations and ongoing support can be conducted by telephone and email.
